Cambridge Street Art - London Artist Malarky

Early last summer I received an email asking if I was free over the weekend to possibly take some photographs and hang out at a secret Cambridge countryside location with a number of national and international street artists.

Following a number of phone calls and emails all of which were a little vague and short on info, I took a gamble and said yes.

The following day I bought myself a train ticket to Cambridge with no real idea of where exactly I was going, a phone call later on arrival to Cambridge train station followed by a short wait, and I was picked up and driven to a remote countryside warehouse.

Turns out the few artists were actually 14 artists from six different countries who Propa Stuff had invited to spend the weekend creating, collaborating, and hanging out in the countryside location.

Many of the artists we had met before in London or in other locations and some we were meeting for the first time and included
Alice Pasquini, Ciroschu, LNY, Mateus Bailon, Max ‘Ripo’ Rippon, Miss Van, Malarky, Mr. Gauky, Mr. Penfold, Pener, She One, Shery, The Yok, and Richard Watkins.

With the summer sun blazing all weekend, DJs on the decks keeping the music going, spray paint fumes and paint flying around, free-flowing beer and barbecues, this gathering had a festival feel to it but on a more chilled-out tip.

This event allowed the artists the freedom to be creative with no surface outta bounds, warehouse walls, doors all got painted up with individual pieces alongside some collaborative murals.

The space also housed an array of old objects, from vintage signs, furniture, old photos, and other bits of old junk which were redecorated and transformed into beautiful pieces of art by the artists. A number of artists turned their hands to sculpture for the first time pulling apart an old bit of furniture and creating new 3D works.

Now just over a year after the event in Cambridge, art collective Propa Stuff will host an exhibition at Downstair at Mother on Red Church Street where they will showcase some of the best street art pieces of work created by the invited street artists over that summer weekend.

They have also invited artist PENER back to London where he will be taking over one of the walls at Mother with some live paintings during the exhibition opening.

Music on the evening will be provided by DJ Vadim and Nickname with live music by Vukasin Markovich.

The Propa Stuff exhibition opens Thursday, September 4th and again on the 11th from 7pm – 10pm.
