Italian Street Artist RUN's London mural
A one-time London resident, Italian street artist and muralist Giacomo Bufarini aka RUN was recently back visiting London and the artist found some time to paint a new mural in East London.
It's been close to a year since we last saw Bufarini in town, Hookedblog managed to catch up with the street artist on his last London visit when he painted a large scale mural on the gable end of a building in Walthamstow with the E17 based Woodstreet Walls.

Bufarini revisited Lower Clapton, an east London neighborhood where he has been painting murals since early 2012. His first mural painted at this location was in 2012 but shortly after the completion, the piece got defaced by a local resident. The artist returned to create a new piece in 2013.This second mural was also defaced within a week of it being painted with paint splashed across the mural, possibly the same resident who had defaced the first. Bufarini decided the damage was not that extensive and returned to the site and repaired the damage that had been done.
This retouched mural ran for a number of months after which Run decided it needed a refresh and repainted the whole wall with something completely new in 2014 and again in 2015.
Since he first painted the wall of this derelict building in 2012, Bufarini feels that he has been taking care of this space in Hackney.
He says, “I have painted this wall 5 times in the last 6 years. It’s my spot or is everyone’s place to watch and to make up a story with. Public art is for everyone, the context of art shall reflect the world we live in and make people think. this is made by one individual person, no advert, no product.”

For his fifth and latest mural at this location and the current heatwave we have been enjoying here in London, Bufarini has painted what at first look appears to be a typical European beach scene packed with a mix of people chilling on the beach enjoying the sunshine, playing ball and building sandcastles.
He says, "Today in this hot summer of 2018 with all the chaos in Europe and Africa people chilling on the beach ... Not everybody but mostly".
On closer inspection, we see an overturned toy boat with a number of figurines laying flat on their backs next to the red and bucket and spade. In the distance of the beach scene, we see an overcrowded inflatable lifeboat with a number of people overboard in distress some with life jackets, others without.
The completed mural by RUN can be seen on Downs Road, off Lower Clapton Road.
