Saber's The Ugly American Exhibition
Hookedblog were fortunate enough to stumble upon US Graffiti artist Saber's 'The American Graffiti Artist' show at the Opera Gallery on a trip to New York way back in 2011. We had been visiting the city for the opening of Sweet Toof's Dark Horse solo show at Factory Fresh and following the opening of the show we headed into Manhattan a few days later with Sweet Toof to check out some of the NY galleries.
It was while we were at the Opera Gallery that we learned of the show opening at the gallery the following evening. It was the first time we had seen any of Saber's gallery work in person and were blow away but some of the beautiful textures in the work. The opening was also special as we got to met some of the NY graffiti artists who made an appearance at the show preview and took time to chat to us, Mare139, Cope2, Ron English, KET, TERROR161 and Indie 184 among others.
So when we received an email just before the holidays about Saber's new body of work coming to London, we were pretty excited. The enormously well-received 'Ugly American' exhibition was unveiled at The Outsiders Newcastle space in late 2013, and now travels to the capital by popular demand. Opening at their Soho space Thursday 9th January with Saber in attendance, it's certainly not a show to be missed and what a great way to kick start the new year.
We managed to make it to the Private view on Thursday and below are a selection of images we took on the opening night. The Ugly American Exhibition runs until 15th February so plenty of time for people to go and see this impressive body of work in person. We also suggest checking out this online interview with Saber which appeared in the Financial Times Life and Arts Section.
